Tracking AdSense Traffic

Tracking AdSense traffic

The key to AdSense success lies in good preparation, good content and good traffic. If the first two are done well, the third part shouldn’t be too difficult. But how can you measure how well you are doing? How can you keep track of your AdSense traffic levels?
Maximising on all the work you’ve put into your site you need to have an understanding of the nature of your incoming and outgoing traffic. Promoting your site is a continuous iterative process. Each marketing strategy has to be further refined and adjusted in order to get better search engine rankings.
Keep the tracking simple
So what do you need to know? How can you keep the process simple? There are three main areas you need to focus on when analyzing the activities of your visitors.
  • General traffic levels
  • Incoming links
  • Outgoing links
There is a lot of technical software out there to help you collect the data you need. But don’t get too distracted by what they can do. Most just pile you with tons of unnecessary data. Try and keep your information simple.

Track your AdSense traffic with Google analytics

One of the best ways to analyze user activity on your site is to use Google analytics. It is a fantastic toolset that enables you to track nearly every aspect of users activities on your site. Functions of Google analytics include:
  • Tracking visitor location: It can tell you what country your visitors are coming from.
  • Keyword tracking: It lets you know which keywords visitors use in all their search queries to your site.
  • Customer journey tracking: Tracks the page visitors first land on in your site, it also tracks the path they take through it.
  • As well as all the basic traffic data you’ll need to keep track of user activity on your AdSense website.
How Google analytics works
Basically, Google utilizes a small snippet of JavaScript to collect the information. This is placed close to the footer HTML of the web pages of you website.
Installing it into your AdSense website is simple
All you do is enter the URL of your AdSense website that you want to track. Google then generates a unique JavaScript code that you simply copy and paste into the pages of your site. To gain access to Google analytics all you have to do its register using your Google account at http://www.google.com/analytics/.
Google analytics operates in the background
Unlike other tracking software, Google analytics doesn’t interfere with any other aspect of your site. It is out of the way and hidden making it an ideal tracking tool.

Analyzing your AdSense traffic statistics

Most traffic tracking tools use the same kind of terminologies to describe the various data that they collect. But what do some of these terminologies mean? Here’s a small summary of the most popular and useful terms:
  • Visits: This is the total number of visits to your site. This of course can be broken down to daily, monthly or even yearly figures depending on the quality of your tracking tool and your personal needs.
  • Visitors: This is the number of different users that visit your website. For example a user can be responsible for 20 visits. Unique visitors are noted through each new IP address that hits your site.
  • Hits: This is a slightly complex one... First some background. Most web pages are composed of graphical elements and HTML. A hit is any element that is called by a browser when it asks for a page. So for example if a web page has 4 graphical elements and 1 HTML element and is requested just once that represents 5 hits.
So what is the significance of hits? Well, it doesn’t have a significance really. It’s mostly just quoted to exaggerate the popularity of certain sites. All in all, ignore any statistical data that uses hits.
  • Popular page views: There are various page view statistics. Most data about your website pages are displayed on a per-page basis. This information gives you an understanding of your visitors needs and good idea of what works and what doesn’t in your AdSense website. For example, dividing the number of page viewed by the number of unique visitors gives you the average number of pages viewed by your users.
  • Referrer URLS: This information tells you where your traffic is coming from. And gives you a good idea of your most successful source of incoming traffic (for example, search engines, link exchanges, other websites etc...).
  • Keyword search: Tells you which keywords are used by your visitors through search engines to find your site. Very essential information for tracking the success of your optimization measures and tweaking them further.
How to use the information
The information that you collect tells you how successful your AdSense campaign has been. It gives you the raw data about the quantities of visits and the type of users that come to your site. It also shows you where they come from and the words they used to find you.
You can use the information you gathered to focus on your best performing pages and gear your content more towards what gets the click.
From this you can also decide on how best to spend your time traffic building and how best to spend money (if you ever decide to) towards bettering you rankings.
...pull quote A note about spending money:  It is worth investing in building your traffic levels. The investment is going to pay off in the end when the traffic starts flowing through your site and you start earning some serious money from your AdSense ads. But make sure you plan your marketing strategy well. Only invest on worthwhile link building schemes.
