Making sense of AdSense keyword values

So we have the Keyword Opportunity Index (KOI) but what does it mean? Some numbers are quiet large others are relatively small, but what significance do they all have to the AdSense keywords we’ve researched so far?
To make our KOI values easier to analyze and digest we still have to make one more calculation.

The Keyword Potential Index (KPI)

This last calculation involves converting the KOI figures into common logarithms (base-10) and multiplying the resultant value by two. This gives us the Keyword Potential Index of each word. We can now asses and analyze the value of each word using a scale of numbers that we are familiar with. With the KPI we can better compare our AdSense keywords without having to struggle with the large cumbersome numbers thrown at us using solely KOI values. Using a calculator you can work out the KPI by:

Log (KOI value) → (x2) → KPI value

Calculator

Poor potential keywords

Using KPI we can now easily see the keywords at the lower end of the scale. Any AdSense keyword value below 2 has a low exploratory value. There is either a low demand for the keyword, or there is far too much supply and it has been oversaturated. Sometimes these low value keywords can be quite popular, but that popularity has been catered for by millions of websites.

High value keywords

These are the keywords that have KPI values of 6 and over. These normally have good exploratory potential. It often indicates that the demand is very high and there isn’t enough supply. Or it indicates that supply is very low with moderate demand levels. There is less competition in general for these AdSense keywords. And your web pages will show up strongly (with high page ranks) in search queries by visitors using these keywords as long as your website is well optimized and adequately promoted.

But be careful of some of these high value keywords

Certain single keywords don’t count. Some have extremely high KPI values, where they have fantastically high demand, and supply levels in the millions. These are the hyper-popular keywords (like money, business, health etc...). Avoid these keywords at all costs.
Try and focus on keywords that are two or more words long if possible (they are less likely to be saturated). You may find combination keywords that have KPI values of 10 and over but be cautious of such words and always look out for the supply figures. If they are over 3 million no matter what the KPI values say, they are already too popular. Only pursue these if you are ultra-sure about your possibility of success.

Intermediate AdSense keywords

AdSense keywords with Keyword Potential Index values over 2 are worth some consideration. They are not ideal but they could have some potential that you can explore to your benefit.
Keywords within the 2-6 range can have a peripheral, stabilizing role on your website. These words (and their synonyms) can be scattered liberally through your site. Those keywords at the upper end of the scale can even act as page-specific keywords if you don't have enough high value keywords to use.
For a quick way to work out KOI and KPI values use the Keyword calculator.
